What is Libertalia?

Libertalia, officially known as the Republic of Libertalia, is a self-declared sovereign state located in Lake County, Florida, founded on November 27th, 2017 with the aim of creating a fully functional democratic state where the personal freedoms of it's citizens are guaranteed through a system of proportional, representative democracy. 

Libertalia has not continuously existed since its foundation. The nation has gone through many different periods of activity, notably being defunct from March of 2020 to March of 2022, with March 12th being known as Reformation Day within Libertalia. 

What makes Libertalia a legitimate nation?

Libertalia was founded utilizing the Declarative Theory of Statehood as defined by the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States. The Declarative Theory of Statehood defines a legitimate, sovereign state as a nation which maintains the following:

• A clearly defined territory

• A permanent population

• A government

• And a capacity to enter into formal diplomatic relations with other nations

Whilst not requiring recognition from another internationally recognized sovereign state. It is under these terms that Libertalia claims legitimacy as an independent nation.
